Big firms like IBM are snatching up patents for blockchain-based products

If you’ve been keeping up-to-date with the happenings on Wall Street and the larger financial world then you’ve probably noticed a growing trend, which is that everyone loves blockchain. Big firms like IBM are snatching up patents for blockchain-based products and several hedge funds and investment firms like BlackRock are adding blockchain-based assets to their portfolios.

So far, the message is clear; Wall Street sees huge potential in blockchain-based assets and is working to get in as early as possible and cash out. But what is so appealing about blockchain that it has Wall Street heavyweights rushing to snatch it up at record speeds?

The Anatomy of Blockchain

The reason blockchain has captured the attention of so many industries is because it is capable of doing so many things. Blockchain is a technology that creates a permanent ledger of transactions that take place across it.

This means that if blockchain is used in voting, logging transactions, and so on, the records cannot be removed or changed. On top of this, blockchain systems are decentralized, meaning that they are much more secure than traditional computer networks.

With all these in mind, it is no surprise that every industry seems to be exploring blockchain use in some way and thus, it will prove to be financially profitable. Blockchain-based digital assets have also proven to be massively successful over the years, with bitcoin (a blockchain-based currency) being named the highest-performing asset of the last decade.

It not only beat out gold but traditional stocks as well. In fact, such assets are causing investors to question the profitability of traditional stocks in comparison. The types of gains that blockchain-based assets have seen over the years are rare within the world of traditional stocks and now everyone wants a piece of the action.

Over the next few years, we can expect to see even more investment in blockchain and assets based on the technology and those who invest early will likely reap the most rewards. This was unheard of a few years ago and hedge funds weren’t rushing to lace their portfolios with digital assets. Now, Wall Street buying decisions clearly point to blockchain technology as the future of not just how many industries will function and store data but also of trading.
